In October 2013, the European Commission announced it would be carrying out a “fitness check” of the Nature Directives as part of its Regulatory Fitness and Performance (REFIT) Programme.

Last year’s #NatureAlert campaign was hugely successful with over 520,000 people contributing to the European Commission’s public consultation. This was a powerful message to Commissioner Vella and his team, that large numbers of EU citizens consider the Nature Directives fit for purpose.

This was echoed by EU environment ministers meeting in Council in December 2015, and then by the European Parliament in February 2016. The ministers and Parliament both agreed full implementation of the Nature Directives is key to achieving the targets of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020.

In the coming weeks, the European Commission is expected to publish its conclusion on the fitness check and hold the annual Green Week. So now this is the time to remind Commissioner Vella, and his 27 other Commissioner colleagues, that EU citizens are still behind the Nature Directives, and are anxious to see action, and have them fully implemented in order to benefit the environment and local communities.
