Thanks to the unexpectedly ideal weather conditions of the 9-10 November weekend, new and veteran birders alike relished this unique birdwatching experience. All seminar presentations were held on Saturday, so that there would be enough time for birdwatching and participation in Sunday’s event on the protection of Amvrakikos, which was organized by the Hellenic Ornithological Society. The two-hour event took place at the barrier beach of Koronissia, where participants sent out their soundless yet powerful message to protect Amvrakikos by forming the phrase with each of the responding Greek letters written on sheets of paper. Within the framework of the event, birds of the area were viewed, informational pamphlets were distributed to passing drivers, and children had fun with creative activities, including games and handicrafts.

As for the rest of the seminar’s schedule, in addition to standard volunteer training presentations, the AWMB made one regarding the lagoons of Amvrakikos, and Ms. Margarita Tzali presented the actions taken by the Greek IBA Caretaker Network since its establishment, ten years ago. Also, 3 IBA Caretakers were awarded prizes for their significant contribution to the protection of their living areas, and for their valuable assistance to the IBA Network throughout this decade. During the Mini Bird Race, over 42 bird species were viewed, including two Imperial Eagles!
The Hellenic Ornithological Society would like to wish the new IBA Caretaker Network volunteers a good start, and the rest to keep up the good work!
